TTC Foundation Welcomes New Trustees

The Trident Technical College Foundation is pleased to announce six new members to the board of trustees. These outstanding individuals bring a variety of professional and personal experiences that will help the Foundation continue its mission to advocate and raise funds for Trident Technical College to support the region’s economy.

Karena M. Bell
is the founder and CEO of Tiger Team Enterprises, a nationwide executive recruiting and talent acquisition firm. With over 25 years of experience, Bell is a trusted expert in relationship-based executive recruiting, with a proven track record in finding and placing key individuals across organizations to drive the strategic goals within the Medical Device, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Life Sciences industries. 

Bell originates from Detroit, MI, and is proud to call Charleston, SC her home since 2013. She has a B.A. in Business Management from 
Northwood University and M.B.A. from University of South Carolina-Darla Moore School of Business. 

In her spare time, Bell enjoys mentoring young girls in leadership, business development and entrepreneurship, volunteering at local animal rescues, and playing golf.


Mary Graham
is the founder of Mary Graham Consulting, a strategic planning consulting firm focused on helping communities, as well as community and economic development organizations. 

Graham founded the firm following a 35+ year career in the economic development and chamber of commerce industry. She served as chief strategy officer for the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. She worked for the Chamber for 29 years in various capacities and help lead the Chamber and community through a major base realignment and closure effort in 1993.

Graham holds a Bachelor of Economics from Converse College and is nationally certified by both C2ER and the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. She received the Commander’s Public Service Award from Joint Base Charleston in 2017. She is married to The Honorable Thomas L. Carter, the former United States Ambassador to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), retired MAJGEN, USAF.


Doug Hornberger
is the market executive of the southeast coastal market for Merrill Lynch Wealth Management based in Charleston. 

Prior to this, he was the market executive of the Carolina east market in Raleigh, N.C., a position that he held since 2000. He was also the market integration executive for the Triangle, NC market since 2016. Hornberger joined Merrill Lynch in 1981 as a financial advisor in Jenkintown, PA. In 1990, he became the sales manager in the Cleveland, OH Region, and became resident vice president of the Delray Beach Complex in 1993. Doug was promoted to market executive in the West Palm Beach Complex in 1996 where he remained until 2000. 

Hornberger is originally from Pennsylvania and earned his undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University and graduate degree from The Catholic University of America.

Hornberger was a board trustee of the North Carolina Symphony of which he served as board chair from 2003 to 2006 and was also on the board of Kidznotes. He is currently on the board of governors of the Wianno Club in Osterville, MA and has served on the board of the North Carolina Museum of History and the Wake County Education Foundation.


Jeremy Ross
is a 3rd generation printing company owner of Ross Printing. With a team of 23 in North Charleston and a combined experience of 400+ years, Ross and his team provide creative, high-quality printing and direct-mail solutions.

Ross moved to Charleston from NY in 1987 and served in the US Army Infantry 1988-1991. He has a BA in Communications from the College of Charleston. He went to work for the family business in 1991 and purchased it in 1999. He acquired Advantage Graphics in 2001, Low Country Target Mailing in 2010 and Jacksons Printing in 2011.

He has received several local honors & awards: Charleston Chamber Small Business of the Month Sept 07, 40 under 40 in 2008, 2012 Roaring Twenties Winner, SC Biz News, October 2012 and Charleston’s Choice Winner for Best Printer - 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Ross lives in Hanahan with wife Kimberly. They have 3 children. All currently attend TTC.

 

Michael Scarafile
is president of Caroline One Real Estate Services, the market leader and largest real estate company in South Carolina.

Scarafile grew up in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Porter-Gaud High School in 1991. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1995 and went on to the South Carolina School of Law and graduated in 1998. 

He clerked for the Honorable A. Victor Rawl in the S.C. Circuit Court before joining the McNair Law Firm where he spent six and a half years as a litigation associate. He later joined Carolina One Real Estate Services in 2005 as General Counsel and took over as President in 2011. 

He was named to the Charleston Reginal Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 in 2012 and in 2017 was ranked #144 in the Swanepoel Power 200, recognizing the most powerful leaders in Residential Real Estate.


Allison Delaney Stoney
began her long-term career with AT&T in 2007. In 2016 Stoney was called to AT&T headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia to assist with corporate growth and development by leading the nationwide Omni-Channel initiative. This strategic corporate decision allowed Allison to lead retail managers and account executives across 29 points of distribution. She has retired from AT&T after more than two successful decades in the telecommunications industry.

Stoney is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the Jack Welch Management Institute at Strayer University with a GPA of 4.0.

Her volunteer efforts include St. Patrick Catholic Church, area food banks and women’s shelters, the American Heart Association and her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

Loss of Former TTC Film Student Inspires Events

Sarah Jones, a 27-year old camera assistant, was tragically killed last February by a freight train while filming a movie in southeast Georgia.  Since then, many friends and colleagues of Jones, a former TTC student, have spoken out about the safety issues surrounding the film industry.  Film Veteran Presented Workshop in Honor of Sarah Jones Douglas C. Hart, a respected camera technician in the film industry, agrees that safety on film sets must be improved.   Hart presented a a free public workshop at Trident Tech last month. He literally wrote the book on working as a camera assistant. His textbook, “The Camera Assistant: A Complete Professional Handbook,” is used by film students at Trident Tech and at other colleges around the country. In a meeting with TTC film students and in the workshop, Hart focused on safety as well as many other aspects of working in the industry, including camera mechanics, on-set procedures, lenses and filters, and screen tests. Walter the Miracle Poodle

By Heather Hobbs, Instructor, Veterinary Technology Program When people hear about the Veterinary Technology program offered at Trident Technical College, what often comes to mind is “How fun – puppies and kittens!" Walter, after treatment But in reality, it's not just about playing with baby animals. More often, we pick up animals from the local shelter who are less likely to be adopted because of medical and surgical needs. The students work them up (physical exams, bloodwork, radiographs), then treat them according to a veterinarian’s instructions (assist in surgery, dental cleaning, hospitalization and behavior modification). Once these patients are well, they return to the shelter ready to be placed in their forever homes.
